The EAN promise

The promises every member signs.

Eight statements, agreed in full or not at all. They are binding, the network enforces them, and they have never been reworded. Take them with you and see whether the agency sitting in your kitchen behaves like somebody who signed them.

Agreed in full, or not at all Open a promise to read what it rules out
  1. We promise to always act in our clients' best interests.

Rules out the defence that something was technically allowed. A member who acts against a client's interest and can point to a clause has still broken the first thing they signed.

  2. We promise to always tell the truth. Simple.
  3. We promise to do the right thing even if it costs us time, money, or both.

This is the one with a price on it. Every agency will tell you it puts clients first. This one is a commitment to keep doing it on the day it costs them the instruction.

  4. We promise to never criticise our rival agents, as it undermines our profession.

Including about agents outside the network. If a member runs down a rival in your kitchen to win your business, they have broken this, and you are entitled to say so.

  5. We promise to respect the members' area exclusivity rule.
  6. We promise to share ideas, tips, issues and advice with fellow members.
  7. We promise to support the local community whenever and wherever we possibly can.
  8. We promise to respect and invest in our team's learning and development.

The person standing in your kitchen is the product. This is a commitment to keep spending money on them rather than on the shopfront.

What happens if one of them is broken.

The membership ends and the agent can no longer advertise they are a member in any way. That is the whole difference between a code of ethics and a marketing line: this one can be taken away, and it has to be, or none of the eight above are worth reading.

If you think a member has fallen short of any of these, tell us. You do not need to have instructed them, you do not need to be sure, and you do not need anything in writing.
