Escaping the Estate Agency Echo Chamber

I don’t really “do” estate agency conference season.
That’s for three main reasons.
First, I don’t drink booze anymore. And like it or not, a lot of these events feel like glorified piss-ups with a bit of learning and business bolted on.
Second, many of the speaker line-ups feel very similar. The same faces, sharing the same stories, saying the same things. I often leave thinking, “I’ve heard all of this before.”
And third, the agency event scene can feel a bit cliquey and overly happy with itself. A lot of back-patting. A dollop of “aren’t we brilliant?” and not a lot of genuinely new thinking.
I should stress this isn’t arrogance. I love learning new things. But I think if you only listen to people within your own industry, you end up stuck in an echo chamber.
So where do I look for inspiration instead?
Five Places I Go for Fresh Ideas
The James Sinclair Podcast
James Sinclair is a straight-talking entrepreneur running everything from nurseries to leisure attractions. His podcast is part business lesson, part reality check. It’s all about real numbers, real experiments, and real customer focus. Estate agents could learn a lot from how he builds systems and simplifies growth.
The Founders Podcast
David Senra’s Founders is one of my favourite sources of inspiration. Each episode distils the lessons from a biography of an entrepreneur, inventor, or business builder. It’s like having access to a mastermind group comprised of history’s most accomplished operators. You start to spot patterns that apply directly to estate agency: consistency, obsession with service, and a refusal to stand still.
Entrepreneurs Circle
I was a member of Nigel Botterill’s Entrepreneurs Circle for a couple of years. It helped sharpen my thinking around marketing, follow-up, and being proactive rather than reactive. Towards the end, it became a bit repetitive for me, but there’s still a ton of practical, usable marketing advice in there for anyone running a small business.
The Business Section of The Sunday Times
Yes, it’s one of the “posh” papers, but the business profiles in The Sunday Times are excellent. They read like mini business documentaries – full of lessons on leadership, customer experience, scaling, and resilience. Swap their sector for “estate agency” and you’ll find loads of ideas you can adapt.
Audible (Especially Biographies)
Audible is a goldmine. Some of the business biographies that have stuck with me include:
• Felix Dennis – raw, honest, and full of lessons on ambition and risk.
• Shoe Dog by Phil Knight – brilliant on persistence and brand-building.
• Simon Jordan’s autobiography – chaotic but insightful.
And Atomic Habits by James Clear remains my favourite book. Tiny improvements, applied consistently, can transform results in life AND estate agency.
Heads-Up for 2026
As I’m passionate about avoiding the industry echo chamber, the Ethical Agent Network will host an event for its members in 2026.
No usual industry suspects.
No recycled talks.
No predictable panels.
Instead, fresh thinking, fresh voices, and genuinely useful ideas ( I hope) from people outside the usual estate agency circuit. It’ll be practical, different, and designed to help ethical agents grow without falling into the same old industry patterns.
Over to You
That’s where I escape when I want new ideas. I’d genuinely love to know where you get your inspiration.
